Work Location
Flexible. This internship is designed to be full-time and in person but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate.

3-6 months

Duties and Responsibilities
The internship is in the English Unit of the Web Services Section of the News and Media Division of the Department of Global Communications. The section is responsible for the design, development, maintenance, and overall support of the UN’s flagship public internet website www.un.org, and many related sub sites that are managed by the Department of Global Communications (DGC).

Within limits of delegated authority, the intern will be responsible for one or more of the following duties:

      • Support the development of a scalable, data-driven website by contributing to both back-end and front-end tasks.
      • Conduct research on the web for content on thematic issues.
      • Assist with automated web data collection using Python and Scrapy.
      • Contribute to JavaScript-based front-end features and user interactions.
      • Participate in version-controlled collaboration using Git.
      • Assist in content formatting, layout optimization, and integration of visuals such as graphics, photos, and videos.
      • Support light video editing (e.g., subtitles/audio) or creation of short clips as needed.
      • Utilize web and multimedia tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, HTML, CSS, WordPress, or Drupal.

Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

    • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
    • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Applicants must also:

      • Be computer literate in standard software applications
      • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter
      • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

A completed online Application (Cover Note and Personal History Profile) is required. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. The Cover Note must include:

      • Degree Programme (What are you currently studying)
      • Graduation Date (When will you graduate or when did you graduate from the programme)
      • Explain why you are the best candidate for this specific internship
      • Explain your interest in the United Nations Internship Programme

In your online Personal History Profile, be sure to include all past work experiences, IT skills, and three references.

Due to the high volume of applications received, ONLY successful candidates will be contacted.

Applicants who are children or siblings of a staff member shall not be eligible to apply for an internship at the United Nations.

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

Do you meet the above criteria?
Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme.

Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Teams. Ability to draft, format, edit, and post original website content is desirable. Ability to use web-related tool such as Adobe Creative Suite is desirable.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Intern Specific text
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
