Position description

The Social Development Division/ Sustainable Demographic Transition Section internship is for 3-6 months. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Sustainable Demographic Transition Section.

The Social Development Division consists of three sections namely:

  • Sustainable Demographic Transition Section (SDTS);
  • Sustainable Socio-economic Transformation Section (SETS); and
  • Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Section (GESIS), covering the thematic areas of inequality and social protection, population dynamics, ageing, migration, gender equality, disability and youth.

The Sustainable Demographic Transition Section (SDTS) monitors and analyses trends and formulates policy options to address population and development issues of concern to Asian and Pacific Member States, including ageing, international migration and youth.

Specific, daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background and work carried out in the Section at the time of the internship. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Undertaking literature reviews, analysis and compilation of data from secondary sources on: population trends and demographic changes and their implications on sustainable development; international migration; population ageing and its impact on sustainable development, including access to social protection for older persons and the rights of older persons; and engaging youth and older persons in implementing the 2030 Agenda.
  • Assisting in organizing meetings, including attending to all relevant preparations.
  • Reviewing working papers and reports for accuracy and clarity, and editing, if required.
  • Developing audio-visual materials, i.e. PowerPoint presentations or info charts, to communicate policy messages to non-technical audiences.
  • Analysing data using Excel and other statistical products.
  • Creating substantive website content.
  • Performing other duties as might be assigned by staff concerned and/or the Chief of Section.

The intern will report to the Chief of the Section and other professional staff in the section.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor6s degree or equivalent), preferably in fields such as social studies with data studies; demography; international relations; statistics; human rights law.

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint and MS Teams. Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts is desirable. Ability to design surveys and polls is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage, particularly Chinese or Russian.
