Position description

Twin Cities PBS is looking for a dynamic Environmental & Natural Resources Reporter to join our award-winning Public Affairs team. This grant funded position will focus reporting on environmental and natural resource issues and solutions which are critical resources for Minnesota’s public health, economy, and recreation.

This is a 2-year grant funded role. While it is our hope that there will be continued funding for this work once this timeframe is up, we are unable guarantee the funding of this position beyond the initial 2-year period. 

Compensation: $80,000 to $93,000 annually in addition to company provided benefits. 

Hybrid Work Environment: Candidates must live in or be willing to relocate to the Twin Cities Metro area and report to onsite office a minimum of three days per week.  

MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

ENVIRONMENTAL AND NATURAL RESOURCES REPORTING (75% of time)

  • Demonstrated ability to research, pitch, and produce enterprise reporting
  • Deep knowledge and experience in covering the intersection of environmental issues and politics
  • Establish and maintain contacts with lawmakers, Tribal leaders, experts, and impacted communities
  • Demonstrated ability to develop complicated and detailed stories so they are easy to understand
  • Excellent storyteller with unwavering journalistic integrity
  • Staying informed about current affairs in Minnesota and nationally
  • Regular travel to communities throughout the state of Minnesota
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deliver them on time
  • Contribute reporting and conversation to Almanac and Almanac at the Capitol

SPECIAL PROJECTS (10% of time)

  • Ability to develop reporting that can be expanded into one-hour specials
  • Partner with other teams to develop branding for statewide distribution
  • Identify content that is unique from prior reporting to be included in additional digital formats

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT (10% of time)

  • Host annual community conversation focused on Minnesota’s environment and natural resources
  • Dynamic, thoughtful personality with proven experience facilitating live, unscripted ability conversations with policy makers, subject matter experts, and residents in a town-hall type forum.

Other duties as assigned (5% of time)

  • Participate as an active member of the Public Affairs Team. Contribute to shared goals and collaborate with colleagues on achievement of priorities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Experience
  • 5 years in broadcast or multimedia journalism
  • 3 years of on-camera reporting
Preferred Experience 
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 7+ years as featured environmental reporter
  • Anchoring/hosting experience 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Unwavering journalistic integrity with strong editorial and ethical judgement
  • Strong on-camera presence in live, recorded, and community settings
  • Ability to read teleprompter, use a keywall, and other common production tools
  • Excellent writing, grammar, and proofreading skills
  • Proficient with social media and digital publishing (WordPress, Drupal, etc)
  • Strong computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite – Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive, Teams, the Adobe Creative Suite and Prior experience with ENPS/iNews a plus.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills. Able to multitask in a fast-paced, time sensitive production environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with all team members. 
  • Commitment to advancing Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) priorities within the organization.
  • Ability to travel to locations in throughout the state of Minnesota on a frequent basis.
