Position description

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy Department of Government invites applications for a tenure track position as Assistant, Associate, or Professor of Government. The desired start date is August 10, 2026.

This is an appointment in the excepted service as a tenure track faculty member on a 10-month work schedule for an initial period not to exceed three years, with extensions and a permanent appointment contingent on successful progress and tenure reviews. The first two years of appointment to federal service is a trial period. The work schedule is full-time. Anticipated work hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. This position is not eligible for telework and not eligible for remote work. All teaching is done in person. Relocation expenses may be authorized. Occasional travel is required.

Salary offers may be made outside of the listed range for exceptional candidates.

The Department of Government seeks applicants for a tenure track faculty position. We seek a colleague who will teach classes in international relations with a focus on maritime strategy and governance, lead undergraduate research, perform scholarly research, advise students, and contribute service to the institution. The selectee will teach in-person classes during Fall and Spring semesters and may be asked to teach during the summer term. Remote or virtual teaching is not an option. Major duties include:

    • Teach 3 classes and up to twelve contact hours/week per semester.
    • Lead undergraduate research and capstone projects.
    • Perform scholarly research in international relations, maritime strategy or governance, and related topics.
    • Perform rank-appropriate service activities for the department, school, institution, and profession.

Qualifications

  1. Doctoral degree in Political Science, International Affairs, International Relations, Government, Law, Public Policy, Marine/Maritime Affairs/Policy, or a closely related field. ABD candidates may apply, see details in “How to Apply.”
    • Interest or expertise in any of the following or related topics:
      a. International maritime affairs by region
      b. Maritime treaties, conventions, and institutions
      c. International maritime trade and transportation
      d. International maritime security or conflict
      e. Technological change and governance
      f. The intersection of geopolitics and maritime governance
    • Experience developing and teaching courses in international relations, maritime strategy or governance, or related subjects using evidence-based and innovative classroom teaching methodologies.
    • Prior research projects with undergraduates and a publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
    • Demonstrable experience consistent with a full commitment to the Coast Guard’s core values of Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty.

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement with the exception of the doctoral degree.
