Summary by Geopolist | Istanbul Center for Geopolitics:

The latest statements by US President Donald Trump regarding recovering control of the Panama Canal indicate escalating tensions between the US and China in Latin America. Following Trump’s words at his inauguration, U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt presented a resolution calling on Panama to evict Chinese interests and halt Chinese control over major Panamanian ports, including those at the ends of the Panama Canal. The resolution also calls for investments to modernize the canal’s infrastructure and reduce Panama’s dependency on Chinese firms.

The dispute centers on the role of Hutchison Ports, a Hong Kong-based corporation that runs Panama’s Balboa and Cristobal ports under a 25-year concession awarded by Panama. Schmitt and others claim that China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which has resulted in Chinese investment in Latin American infrastructure, poses a national security concern to the United States because of China’s rising influence over important trade routes such as the Panama Canal.

Trump’s comments also reflect historical frustrations over the U.S. relinquishing control of the Panama Canal following the 1977 Panama Canal Treaty, which handed over control to Panama in 1999. However, many of these concerns, particularly regarding the role of Chinese interests, stem from geopolitical anxieties over Chinese expansion in global infrastructure.

The debate raises significant questions about the U.S.’s future approach to Chinese influence in Latin America, particularly as China’s investments in the region continue to rise. However, the situation remains complex, with Panama’s sovereignty at the center of the dispute and the U.S. balancing its concerns about Chinese influence with its historical relationship with Panama.
