Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation

Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation

<div class="prose-job-description“>

Position description

The Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation (CACNP) is a Washington, D.C.-based 501(c)(3) organization that seeks to reduce nuclear weapons arsenals, halt the spread of nuclear weapons, and minimize the risk of war by providing policy research, education and analysis to the public and policymakers. The Council for a Livable World (CLW) is a non-partisan 501(c)(4) non-profit organization that promotes policies to reduce and eventually eliminate nuclear weapons via political action. CLW advocates for a more principled approach to U.S. national security and foreign policy and seeks to increase peace and security and to reduce the threat of war and nuclear weapons by representing our members in Washington D.C. and endorsing congressional candidates who support our goals. CLW’s work is complemented by its “sister” organization, the CACNP.

Job Description

The Center and Council are seeking a Senior Communications Associate to support enhanced public outreach efforts. This person will report directly to the Communications Director, and will work closely with the policy team to develop creative and interesting content that informs and urges policymakers and the public to re-engage on nuclear weapons policies.

The Center and Council have a small staff and this person will be an integral part of the team. This person will play a key role in brainstorming ideas for new and compelling content and identifying opportunities to promote our work. This role is ideal for a self-starter who can think creatively, take initiative, and work well independently and in groups.

This employee’s primary focus will be on creating digital media to communicate policy priorities and goals in new and compelling ways, including production of infographics, memes, short videos and the Nukes of Hazard podcast. This person will also perform other communications tasks as directed and support the Communications Director in her work. The ideal candidate is passionate about both digital communication and reducing global nuclear threats. This position is based in Washington, D.C. Employees are required to work in the office with significant remote work allowed as authorized by the Executive Director and must be able to collaborate in a hybrid capacity.

Position Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in journalism, digital media, communications, public relations or related field, plus 3-5 years relevant experience; or a Master’s degree in a relevant field and 1-3 years relevant experience.
  • Excellent writing, editing and project management skills. Familiarity with Associated Press style is helpful but not required.
  • Fundamental understanding of how communications can shape public opinion and policy outcomes.
  • Fluency in the Adobe Creative Suite, especially Photoshop, InDesign and PremierePro. This position is heavily focused on digital content creation including infographics, short videos and in-depth podcast episodes.
  • Deep familiarity with each major social media platform and experience growing meaningful engagement organically. Experience working with influencers is a plus.
  • Experience developing and following messaging guidance and talking points.
  • Ability to comb through legislative calendars, bills, treaties, executive orders and other documents to distill complex information into easy-to-digest digital content.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new software. Familiarity with website management (WordPress), email marketing management (Bonterra/EveryAction) and fundraising software (Harness, ActBlue) is helpful but not required.
  • Interest in non-proliferation, arms control and national security matters is required; experience or background in these areas is a plus. Interest in and basic understanding of the legislative and electoral process is required; prior campaign or legislative experience is a plus.

Responsibilities:

  • Under direct guidance from the Communications Director:
    • Create gifs, infographics, memes, short videos, printed materials and other content to promote our policy and political goals and meet strategic objectives
    • Maintain documentation of media efforts, including press outreach, op-ed placements, and social and web analytics
    • Manage social media presence including outreach for coordinated campaigns
    • Produce the Nukes of Hazard podcast
    • Manage Next Up in Arms Control blog series, including promotion, author coordination, editing and publication
    • Cooperatively and proactively brainstorm new tools and strategies for public engagement on our issues
    • Assist in email communications with organization supporters and members
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Communications Director or the Executive Director.
