Carnegie Corporation of New York

Carnegie Corporation of New York

Position description

Carnegie Corporation of New York was founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1911 and is one of the country’s oldest grantmaking foundations. As stated in its charter, our mission is to promote the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding.

Today our foundation works to reduce political polarization through philanthropic support for the issues that our founder considered most important: education, democracy, and peace.

This position reports to the Vice President, International Program. Key priorities of this position are to contribute to the development and implementation of a “refreshed” International Program strategy, with special emphasis on international peace and security, regional challenges, and American foreign policy.

 Responsibilities:

  • Help develop, understand thoroughly, and implement, through grantmaking and other activities, the program’s strategic goals and supporting objectives.
  • Maintain a wide breadth and depth of knowledge about the current trends, professional practices, and policy issues pertinent to the program.
  • Provide leadership, (e.g., public speaking, written publications, moderating panel discussions), relevant to the International Program’s interests and the Program Director’s expertise.
  • Review, assess, and act on new proposals. Review proposed budgets, staffing, workplans, and anticipated project outcomes to ensure alignment with proposal goals and institutional capacity.
  • Present quality proposals for funding and draft summary documents for review by Corporation leadership and the Board of Trustees clearly identifying proposal strengths, weaknesses, and risks. Draft memoranda, as required, on program-related topics.
  • Conduct appropriate on-site assessments of pending and active projects; monitor and assist with ongoing grants, including engaging directly with grantees, as appropriate.
  • Present at Board of Trustees’ meetings and to Corporation leadership, as required.
  • Manage and develop staff, as appropriate.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in International Relations or relevant field.
  • Wide breadth and depth of professional knowledge and experience.
  • Strong strategic thinking and planning skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Strong verbal communications, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to travel internationally.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in a relevant field.
  • We will consider applicants looking for a full-time position or a senior resident fellow with a minimum commitment of two years.
