Position description

This one-year fellowship was created in honor of award-winning PBS NewsHour anchor Gwen Ifill. The fellow works as part of a producing team to create the weekly, national TV news analysis program, “Washington Week,” as well as the PBS News Weekend. The fellow will work collaboratively with producers to research national and international news stories, gather video elements, assist with scripts, monitor and log live news events, generate story ideas, copy edit, and produce broadcast and web content. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Research news stories and prepare background information for producers.
  • Assist with scripts and other control room production
  • Produce video, sound, and graphic elements for the broadcast and/or website.
  • Log and archive live video feeds and maintain production notes.
  • Work with Washington Week and PBS News Weekend staff to update program website and create web pages with text, photos, graphics, and features including but not limited to interviews, etc.
  • Contribute to social media outreach.
  • Participate in special projects and perform other duties as assigned.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • College degree required. Major in journalism, digital media, communication, history, or political science preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in journalism, news writing and copy editing.
  • Experience should include creating digital or broadcast content including shooting and editing from concept to completion.
  • Background in web production helpful.
  • Must have a keen interest and broad knowledge of national and world events, politics, and history.
  • Knowledge of television news and video production including familiarity with AVID, Final Cut and/or Adobe Premier editing, digital shooting, and Photoshop.
  • Sound editorial judgment, solid broadcast writing skills, and careful attention to detail when editing and proofreading.
  • Dependable organizational and time management skills. Able to adapt to changing deadlines.
  • Experience using the web for research and summarizing findings.
  • Basic knowledge of HTML/CSS, Drupal, or familiarity with other CMS helpful.

ELIGIBILITY

  • U.S. Citizen
  • Recent graduate (within the past 12 months) of an undergraduate, or graduate program from an accredited school.
  • Recipient of need-based financial assistance for college/university education.
  • Autobiographical essay to be no longer than 300 words.

EDUCATION:

  • BA/BS (4-Year College / University Degree).

LOCATION: 

WETA and NewsHour Productions are Washington, DC established media and news organizations.  We are a largely local workforce based out of the Campbell Place office in Arlington, VA.  WETA and NewsHour Productions value employee flexibility when possible.  Most positions based in our Arlington, VA office will be onsite or hybrid, depending upon the role.
