Position description

The RAND Corporation is a research organization that develops solutions to public policy challenges to help make communities throughout the world safer and more secure, healthier and more prosperous. RAND’s research and analysis address issues that impact people everywhere, including security, health, education, sustainability, growth, and development. Headquartered in Santa Monica, California, RAND has approximately 1,775 people from approximately 55 countries working in offices in the U.S., Europe, and Australia, with annual revenues of about $356.2 million. Also based at the RAND Corporation is the RAND School of Public Policy.The RAND School is the nation’s oldest public policy graduate program and offers both master and doctorate degrees in policy analysis, national security policy, and technology policy. It is also the only program based at an independent public policy research organization.

Position Description

The Associate Dean of Career Services is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive career services that support the professional development and employment success of our students. This role is collaborating with faculty, alumni, and industry partners to create opportunities for students and enhance the overall career services experience. This position has a strong background in career services, higher education, and a passion for innovative new solutions to for the 21st century. This position with report to the Dean.Some of the duties include:

      • Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute a strategic vision for career services that aligns with the goals of the RAND School of Public Policy and meets the needs of a diverse student body. This will include program development, designing and implementing workshops, seminars, and events that enhance students’ professional skills and networking opportunities. The RAND School seeks to leverage innovative new solutions for the 21st century in this area.

      • Career Counseling: Provide individualized career counseling and coaching to students, guiding them in career exploration, job search strategies, and professional development.

      • Employer Relations: Cultivate and maintain relationships with employers, government agencies, and non-profit organizations to create internship and job opportunities for students.

      • Alumni Engagement: Foster connections with alumni to support current students and enhance the career services network.

      • Assessment and Reporting: Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of career services programs and initiatives, providing regular reports and recommendations for improvement.

      • Collaboration: Work closely with faculty, administration, and student organizations to integrate career services into the academic experience.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

      • Thorough knowledge of PC, proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

      • Superior written and verbal communications skills.

      • Ability to effectively manage projects – keeping tasks on schedule while maintaining good relationships with all parties.

      • Demonstrated ability to build effective and collaborative relationships with a wide set of constituencies.

      • Creative problem-solver with critical thinking skills needed to identify problems, evaluate options, and execute solutions.

      • Ability to absorb information rapidly, identify what is important and simplify complexity.

      • Enthusiasm and passion; embracing change as a way of working.

      • Flexible and adaptable regarding varying scope and workload with exceptional time management.

      • Direct supervisory experience and inclusive leadership skills.

      • Team player, with the confidence to take the lead and guide other departments directly or indirectly when necessary.

      • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion including working with people of diverse backgrounds and perspectives across all levels.

      • Strong understanding of public policy, non-profit, and government sectors.

Education Requirements

      • BS/BA in Public Policy, Higher ED, Human Resources, or related field required.

      • MS/MA in related field preferred.

Experience

        • 3-6 or more years of relevant experience required.

Location

      • Santa Monica, CA or Washington DC (Arlington VA).

      • This position is eligible for RAND’s hybrid work environment, which enables a blend of on-site and remote work.

Salary Range

$88,000 – $130,900

RAND considers a variety of factors when formulating an offer, including but not limited to, the specific role and associated responsibilities; a candidate’s work experience, education/training, skills, expertise; and internal equity. The salary range includes base pay plus RAND’s sabbatical pay (which provides additional compensation above base pay when vacation is taken). In addition, RAND provides strong benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, paid time-off and more.
