Position description
The David L. Boren School of International Studies at the University of Oklahoma invites applications for a position holding the ConocoPhillips Endowed Professorship of Chinese and Asian Studies, a full-time, tenure-track or tenured position at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor, beginning August 15, 2027.
We seek a scholar whose research and teaching focus on Chinese politics/political economy, Chinese foreign policy, and/or China’s role in international affairs. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work engages questions across Chinese international relations, including areas such as technology and national security, supply chains and strategic resources, state-market relations, and geopolitical competition in East Asia. Teaching load of 2:1 for the duration of the endowed appointment, with a department standard of 2:2.
The position will strengthen the Boren School’s longstanding commitment to the study of China and U.S.-China relations. The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching in the Boren School with courses that will include Chinese foreign policy, Chinese politics, Chinese political economy, U.S.-China relations, and the international relations of East Asia, as well as thematic courses dealing with technology, supply chains, strategic resources, and/or relations between states and markets.
The successful candidate will also have opportunities to participate in the University of Oklahoma’s broader China-related research community, including the Institute for U.S.-China Issues. Depending on expertise and interest, the faculty member may contribute to the Institute’s programming, including leadership of a China International Relations/Policy/Politics Lecture Series, helping connect scholarship on contemporary China with students, faculty, policymakers, and the wider public.
Applicants must have a Ph. D. in Political Science, International Relations, or a closely related field by the time of appointment and demonstrate the potential for an excellent record of research, publication, and teaching. We welcome methodological and theoretical diversity and particularly encourage applicants whose research contributes to broader debates in international relations, comparative politics, or political economy while maintaining substantive expertise on China.
The David L. Boren School of International Studies is housed within the University of Oklahoma’s Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences and offers undergraduate and graduate programs spanning International Studies and Area Studies. The School provides an interdisciplinary environment for scholarship and teaching on global politics, security, development, political economy, languages, cultures, and world regions.
Qualifications
Required:
- Ph. D. in Political Science or International Relations or expected by time of appointment.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct high-quality China related international relations or comparative politics research.
- Demonstrated ability or potential to teach courses in Chinese Foreign Policy, International Relations of East Asia and Chinese Politics.
Preferred (Not Required):
- One or more publications in relevant peer-reviewed outlets and additional ongoing research in international relations or comparative politics.
- Research expertise in China’s engagement with the world and/or Chinese grand strategy.
- Demonstrated ability or potential to generate external research funding.
- Demonstrated ability or potential to teach courses on international security and emerging technologies.
- Excellence in teaching and in supporting student success.
