Position description

The Senior Associate, communications will manage and grow USA for UNHCR’s digital presence through the organization’s website and blog. This role will oversee website content, design updates, and analytics to ensure communications are accurate, consistent, and aligned with the organization’s mission, values, and brand.

With a strong background in writing, content management, and digital strategy, the Senior Associate will create, update, and optimize web content; collaborate with cross-functional teams; lead the production of major projects such as the annual report; and support executive thought leadership through podcasts and other initiatives. The Senior Associate will also guide interns, liaise with external web vendors, and track key performance indicators to strengthen the organization’s online voice and donor engagement.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

      • Manage, update, and maintain USA for UNHCR’s main website (UNrefugees.org), including auditing content, creating new webpages, managing blogs, and implementing SEO best practices.
      • Collaborate cross-functionally to plan and manage the content calendar, aligning with the fundraising calendar and evolving organizational needs.
      • Oversee blog content by removing outdated material, updating statistics and dates, and producing new posts that highlight refugee stories and organizational impact.
      • Manage external web and design vendors for website redesigns, design requests, and technical support; provide ongoing feedback and troubleshoot issues as needed.
      • Produce, edit, and publish the organization’s annual report, including copywriting, copyediting, sourcing media, and collaborating across departments for content contributions.
      • Support executive visibility and thought leadership by coordinating podcasts, including naming, branding, and marketing across the website, email, social media, and streaming platforms.
      • Advance internal communications by designing and distributing monthly content updates, highlighting published work to support donor communications across fundraising teams.
      • Lead, mentor, and support Communications interns, assisting with recruitment, onboarding, and training activities.
      • Track and analyze website performance using Google Analytics and dashboards; develop reports and insights to inform strategy and improve KPIs.
      • Curate and optimize content to enhance brand visibility and awareness, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
      • Other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

      • Bachelor’s degree
      • 3–5 years of experience in communications, content creation, and website management; nonprofit or humanitarian experience a plus.
      • Strong writing and editing skills with experience creating content for websites, blogs, and reports.
      • Proficiency with website management tools (e.g., Umbraco, WordPress), SEO best practices, content management systems, and Microsoft Office.
      • Design and creative skills with proficiency in Canva and Adobe Creative Suite.
      • Experience with data analysis and reporting tools, including Google Analytics, to define KPIs and provide insights.
      • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple projects and deadlines independently.
      • Strong collaborator and communicator, able to work across teams and provide strategic input.
      • Problem-solving ability, including troubleshooting website issues and managing relationships with external vendors.
      • Passion for humanitarian issues; experience with refugee issues or global affairs preferred.

WORK LOCATION

Hybrid + Washington, DC + May also involve travel to some locations within the company’s region of operations and select donor locations.

COMPENSATION

$67,623 – $79,457
