Position description

Organizational Setting and Reporting Relationships: This internship opportunity is available in the NGO Relations, Advocacy & Special Events Section, Outreach Division, Department of Global Communications. Its duties include connecting the UN with CSOs affiliated with DGC and assisting the department in disseminating information about the UN’s activities. Through a number of programs, the Civil Society Unit collaborates with CSOs whose missions line up with those of the United Nations. Within the unit, the Non-Governmental Liaison Service (NGLS) is responsible for the Call for Participation among Civil Society Entities (not in ECOSOC-status) who have expertise in the specific, substantive areas of UN conferences, meetings, and events. This entails a multi-step process (ideally originating with the adoption of a resolution or agreement on a meeting or event with modalities) to include civil society participation. Two internships are available unpaid and full-time for a period of six months. Interns will work up to five days per week (35 hours). The interns selected will be supervised and supported by the Programme Manager of NGLS and the Communications Officer in the Civil Society Unit. For more information on the Department of Global Communications, please visit: https://www.un.org/en/sections/departments/department-global-communications/ Responsibilities: under supervision, the incumbent will be responsible for the following functions: • Screen and review registration applications for the High-Level Events supported by NGLS • Analyze and run data for registration statistics • Create infographics report for the events • Review and compile CSO submissions for the civil society newsletter • Create social media cards/video content for the events/design event flyers & RSVP Forms • Monitor generic office email and respond to emails • Assist with NGLS Annual report, event planning & taking meeting minutes • Assists in organizing the DGC Civil Society Unit Briefings, Special Events • Provide technical support during meetings • Other duties as required

Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Ability to draft email, publications, or knowledge of social media posts is desirable.

 

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
