Hanbury Strategy

<div class="prose-job-description“>

Position description

We turn insight into impact. Whether a client is facing a communications challenge or has a policy goal, our exceptional team uses our understanding of politics, public opinion and the press to create campaigns that work. We have a relentless focus on achieving great results for our clients.

The role

We are looking to appoint a driven EU Public Affairs Director (Technology) to help grow our expanding Brussels client roster and lead the delivery of high-quality public affairs advice to existing and prospective clients.

This is a dual role. You will provide high-level strategic advice and counsel to clients while playing an active role in the day-to-day management of the firm and contributing to our business development and growth objectives.

The successful candidate will have a strong network within the Brussels institutions and be able to provide clients with sound engagement advice and counsel on the latest political and regulatory developments. Strong knowledge of digital and technology policy is a must.

This is a senior role within our team, typically requiring seven or more years of relevant experience, and you will serve as a member of the Brussels leadership team. This means contributing to decisions on the day-to-day running and development of the business, as well as helping to shape our Brussels offer. You will therefore have an entrepreneurial mindset and experience of pursuing business development opportunities and growing client relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic advisory – Provide strategic advice and counsel to clients to help progress their regulatory and policy agendas in Brussels;
  • Business development – Identify and pursue new business opportunities, including developing proposals, preparing pitches and contributing to the growth of existing client relationships;
  • Build and maintain a network – Develop and maintain a strong network across the European Commission, European Parliament and Council, as well as with other relevant stakeholders. Use these relationships to provide insight and engagement advice to clients and help raise the profile of Hanbury in Brussels and beyond;
  • Team leadership – Lead, manage and develop colleagues, including coaching and training junior team members, reviewing work and providing constructive feedback, delegating effectively and supporting individual development;
  • Operational excellence – Champion high standards of quality and client service, leading by example within your team and across the firm;
  • Positive culture – Contribute actively to the culture of the business, support colleagues and celebrate team successes;
  • Firm leadership – Contribute to the leadership and development of Hanbury’s Brussels office, including helping to shape our proposition, ways of working and growth strategy.

About you

  • Brussels expertise – You are comfortable and experienced navigating the Brussels political and institutional landscape, with an established network across the EU institutions and relevant stakeholders;
  • Sectoral knowledge – You have experience in public policy, with knowledge of digital and technology regulation. You are also comfortable developing expertise in new policy areas as the political agenda evolves;
  • Strategic and drafting skills – You are an excellent communicator and writer, with strong drafting skills in English and one other European language;
  • Entrepreneurial mindset – You are motivated by the opportunity to contribute to business development, win new work, develop client relationships and help shape and grow our Brussels offer;
  • Team leadership – You have demonstrable experience leading, developing and supporting teams;
  • Client-focused and collaborative – You are committed to producing high-quality work, delivering excellent client service and going the extra mile for colleagues and clients;
  • Inclusive and personable – You are respectful, collaborative and comfortable working with people from a diverse range of backgrounds and with different perspectives and opinions;
  • Driven and curious – You are excited by the opportunity to work in a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment and advise clients across a range of industries;
  • Flexible – You are willing to undertake occasional business travel to London and other European capitals;
  • Right to work – You have the right to work in Belgium.

Qualifications

  • 26 days’ paid leave plus bank holidays and time off over Christmas;
  • Normal working hours are 9am – 6pm;
  • Hybrid working policy, with the opportunity to work from abroad for up to four weeks per year;
  • Group assurance (pension) employer contribution;
  • Eligible for the company’s 2027 CCT90 bonus scheme;
  • Monizze lunch vouchers, eco vouchers and a monthly travel allowance;
  • Representation allowance;
  • Health insurance policy;
  • Based in Brussels, with travel to London and other parts of Europe as required.

Application instructions

Please send your CV and a cover letter of no more than one page explaining:

  • Why you want to work at Hanbury; and
