Job Summary

The School of Education at the University of Colorado Boulder seeks a full-time Assistant Professor with expertise at the intersection of the history of education and social studies’ education, beginning in the 2026–2027 academic year.

We seek to hire a scholar with a promising research agenda in the history of education and/or social studies education and who is deeply committed to the preparation of educators who are humanizing, critically conscious, culturally responsive, and civic and democratic engaged. The ideal candidate will mentor doctoral students in one or more of the following graduate program areas: Educational Foundations, Policy and Practice; Humanities Education; Teacher Learning, Research, and Practice. They will also have a record of PK–12 teaching experience, with a preference for experience in elementary settings, and demonstrate a commitment to working with diverse student populations.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Maintaining an active and innovative research agenda and corresponding publication record that reveals a thoughtful and compelling progression of scholarship. This position will conduct research in an area of specialization related to the history of education in the US; teaching and/or learning in history and social studies; or social and cultural contexts or processes in history/social studies learning.
  • Engaging in strong mentoring and teaching and contributing to our teacher education, master’s, and doctoral programs; advise undergraduate students; mentor graduate students; and provide outreach and leadership to the local, school, campus, and larger communities.
  • Teaching undergraduate courses in elementary social studies education and undergraduate and graduate courses in history of education, teacher learning and practice, and/or humanities education.
  • Supporting the development of socially just and historically grounded teacher education curricula.

  • This role is located in Boulder, CO.
  • The workload for this role is 40% research, scholarly, and creative work, 40% teaching, advising & mentoring, and 20% service.
  • Tenure track faculty are expected to teach four courses per academic year, and all courses are typically taught in person on campus.
  • As part of the University of Colorado Boulder’s deep commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, the campus has implemented a reference check pilot program with respect to final candidates for tenured faculty appointments. The annual salary range for this nine-month faculty role is $85,000 – $95,000, plus an $8,000 relocation allowance as applicable.

  • Doctorate (Ph.D.) in education, history of education, curriculum and instruction, or a closely related field by the time of appointment.
  • A record of scholarly productivity or promise of such in history of education and/or social studies’ education.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: history of education in the US; teaching and/or learning in history and social studies; social and cultural contexts or processes in history/social studies learning
  • PK–12 teaching experience in U.S. schools.
  • Evidence of effective teaching at the university level (undergraduate or graduate).
  • A record of working successfully with people from an array of backgrounds and fostering community and belonging.

  • Three or more years of PK-12 teaching experience in U.S. schools
  • Expertise in elementary social studies’ education.
