The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) is a 501(c)(3) independent, international, non-profit advocacy organization based in Washington, D.C., with a proven record of triggering and affecting systemic change to protect the Earth’s environment. For more than three decades, EIA has applied a variety of groundbreaking methods to drive change – including pioneering the use of undercover investigative techniques to expose environmental crime and drive impact. These crimes include illegal trade in endangered wildlife, illegal logging and associated trade in illegal timber, environmental violations in the extractives sector, and the trade in both climate-damaging and ozone-layer-depleting gases.

Position description:
EIA is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Extractive Industries Campaign Lead to join one of the most dynamic advocacy teams in Washington, D.C. We are seeking an energetic and enthusiastic individual to provide strategic and programmatic leadership. The Campaign Lead will develop and lead campaign strategies, oversee implementation across priority geographies, manage campaign team members, resources and funding, and build relationships with partners, including Indigenous People, local communities, government officials, corporate actors, funders, and other key stakeholders.
The Campaign Lead will work closely with EIA staff across campaigns, investigations, communications, fundraising, and grants to translate research and evidence into effective advocacy and policy interventions. The role will be responsible for ensuring that campaign activities are strategically aligned, effectively implemented, appropriately resourced, and responsive to the priorities, needs, and leadership of partners and affected communities.
This position is based in Washington, D.C.
Main Roles and Responsibilities:
- Design, lead, and implement EIA’s Extractive Industries campaign strategy, priorities, and objectives.
- Translate campaign strategy into effective workplans, advocacy initiatives, partnerships, and measurable outcomes.
- Establish and guide campaign priorities as political, organizational, and funding conditions evolve.
- Ensure campaign projects and activities are aligned with EIA’s broader organizational strategy, values, and programmatic priorities.
- Lead advocacy with governments, public officials, prosecutors, corporate actors, and other decision-makers to advance campaign objectives and policy reforms related to transparency, accountability, environmental protection, human rights, and community rights.
- Build and maintain relationships with Indigenous Peoples and Local communities, civil society organizations, government officials, corporate representatives, funders, and other strategic stakeholders, following partners’ lead and supporting approaches grounded in the priorities, knowledge, and rights of affected communities.
- Represent EIA in high-level meetings, conferences, public forums, and other external settings, including meetings with government officials, prosecutors, private companies, funders, and civil society organizations.
- Work with EIA investigators and campaign staff to identify research priorities and translate investigative findings into effective campaign and advocacy strategies.
- Review and assess emerging trends, risks, and opportunities affecting extractive industries and their supply chains in priority geographies.
- Ensure that campaign positions, advocacy materials, and policy recommendations are grounded in credible evidence and informed by relevant stakeholders and partners.
- Oversee and contribute to the development of campaign materials, including reports, briefings, press releases, blogs, and other public communications, in collaboration with EIA’s Communications team.
- Supervise and support campaign staff as the team develops. Develop campaign staff, establishing clear expectations, priorities, and accountability.
- Foster a collaborative, respectful, inclusive, and supportive team environment in which staff can contribute effectively and develop professionally.
- Serve as a spokesperson for the campaign when appropriate and engage with journalists and other media representatives on key campaign issues.
- In collaboration with the team, engage in developing grant proposals, concept notes, donor communications, and other fundraising materials.
- Develop and manage the campaign budget in collaboration with Finance and EIA leadership.
- Participate in organizational planning, meetings, and cross-departmental initiatives as appropriate.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience in Environmental Studies, International Relations, Public Policy, Human Rights, Mining, Sociology, or in a related field.
- Minimum of 8 years of demonstrated professional experience in advocacy, corporate and government campaigning, policy, or related work, including significant experience (5+ years) developing and implementing campaign strategies.
- Demonstrated experience leading advocacy or campaigning initiatives and managing relationships with senior external stakeholders in diverse geographical contexts such as Africa, Europe, Latin America, and North America.
- Experience related to extractive industries, environmental issues, human rights, supply chains, governance, or a closely related field.
- Experience with fundraising, grant proposal development, donor stewardship, and/or donor reporting.
- Experience managing budgets, programs, and/or organizational resources.
- Experience mentoring or managing multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
- Excellent written and oral communication, research, analytical, strategic planning, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work with significant autonomy, manage competing priorities, and adapt to a fast-paced and evolving environment.
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally.
- Professional fluency in English and Spanish or French is required.
- Demonstrated commitment to environmental protection, human rights, and working respectfully with affected communities and partners.
- Ability to maintain a high level of efficiency, confidentiality, and integrity in a fast-paced, demanding, and often changing environment.
- Excellent work ethic, high standards, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently as well as in a team.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience working with communities affected by extractive industries
- Experience working in Latin America and the Congo Basin.
- Professional fluency in Portuguese.
- Experience working with enforcement authorities.
- Experience with investigative research or journalism, intelligence gathering, or field-based research.
The salary range provided for this position is based on market data specific to Washington, D.C. Therefore, the salary range specified for this position is subject to adjustment based on the successful candidate’s actual location and prevailing market conditions in that location.
