Documented

Documented

Position description

Documented is dedicated to publishing journalism for and about New York City’s immigrant communities and the policies that affect them. We publish vital, actionable information for asylum seekers and undocumented immigrants living here, as well as hard-hitting and impactful news investigations that have driven policy changes in the city and state. Our original news stories cover the ground-level impact of shifts in labor policy, law-enforcement practices and bureaucratic requirements, the effects of new federal directives as well as Q&As and instructional guides that inform New Yorkers about food, health and financial aid, and legal issues. We have a growing individual donor program and a robust institutional giving program, with support from the Ford Foundation, Emerson Collective, the American Journalism Project, as well as a host of local NYC foundations. Our work has been referenced by The New York Times, The Washington Post, in federal lawsuits, at the New York City Council and many other places.

The role:

The Latino Community Correspondent, Engagement, will play a pivotal role in strengthening our connection with the Spanish-speaking communities in New York through in-person event participation, online engagement, and content creation. This position works primarily with the Spanish Senior Reporter and the Deputy Communities Editor to organize events, represent Documented at third-party events, engage with the community through online platforms, and create content from the conversations held with Spanish-speaking immigrants and the organizations that serve them.

Additionally, this position will be responsible for analyzing engagement metrics and reporting insights to the relevant teams to optimize our community engagement strategies.

This is a full time position based in NYC with a hybrid (in-person/remote) model.

Responsibilities

Community Engagement

  • Build and maintain relationships with Spanish-speaking immigrants, mutual aid groups, advocacy orgs, faith leaders, and social service providers across NYC.
  • Represent Documented at local events, including neighborhood forums, community board meetings, and cultural gatherings.
  • Listen to the community’s information needs and help translate those needs into responsive WhatsApp content or referrals.

WhatsApp Community Coordination

  • Lead and grow Documented Semanal, our WhatsApp news and resource channel for Spanish-speaking New Yorkers.
  • Respond to messages from WhatsApp users, providing links to reliable services and explaining policies in plain language.
  • Track themes and questions that arise in WhatsApp to inform both our community coverage and service products.

Resource & Event Coordination

  • Collaborate with local partners to organize information sessions, pop-ups, and workshops that offer practical support (e.g. housing help, legal rights, health access).
  • Coordinate logistics for Documented’s participation in partner-led events.

Communication & Reporting

  • Summarize community feedback and highlight patterns or emerging concerns for the newsroom and product team.
  • Contribute content ideas or help write community explainers, but this is not a reporting or writing-heavy role.

Qualifications

  • Fluency in both written and spoken Spanish and English.
  • Passion for community engagement and a genuine interest in fostering connections within the Spanish-speaking, Latino communities in New York City.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience preferred in event planning and coordination, with a focus on community-oriented events.
  • Excellent writing skills, with the ability to create compelling and culturally relevant content.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret data and derive actionable insights.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively.
  • Familiar with New York City policies and social programs, and/or willing to learn new developments.
  • Experience in grassroots organizing, mutual aid, casework, or community outreach.
  • Warm, empathetic communicator
  • Familiarity with NYC social safety net programs, public resources, and legal aid landscape—or willingness to learn quickly.
  • Comfort using WhatsApp, Facebook, video and text-based tools to reach community members.
  • Strong time management and ability to juggle conversations, event planning, and internal updates.
  • Must live in NYC.
  • Must be able to work in the United States.

Compensation and Benefits:

Base salary for this role is $80,000. Base salary for this role is $80,000. The base pay is subject to change and may be modified in the future. Medical and dental benefits and four weeks paid time off are provided.
