International Trade Centre (ITC)


Position description

The International Trade Centre (ITC) is a joint agency of the United Nations (UN) and World Trade Organization (WTO) based in Geneva, Switzerland. ITC’s mission is to enable small business export success in developing and transition-economy countries, by providing, with partners, sustainable and inclusive development solutions to the private sector, trade support institutions (TSIs) and policymakers.

The International Trade Centre launched the SheTrades Initiative which aims to empower women entrepreneurs and producers around the globe by providing essential knowledge, resources, and networks. ITC SheTrades helps women access opportunities, overcome barriers, and participate in and gain from global trade. The Initiative unites governments, business support organizations, the private sector, and local entrepreneurs, to work together to strengthen women’s business capabilities and shape a more inclusive, sustainable global economy.

Our work is centered around three pillars:

    • Supporting women to expand their businesses and engage in international trade.
    • Transforming the business ecosystem to open opportunities for women in trade.
    • Shaping the global agenda and driving inclusive policy reforms.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The intern will work remotely, under the direct supervision and guidance of the Head, SheTrades Initiative, DSIT/WYVC. He/she will carry out the following duties:

A) Global advocacy events:

      • Assist in organizing online and in-person events, including SheTrades Summit at MC14, side events at the G20, Partnership webinars, and policy dialogues.
      • Support outreach efforts to engage participants from different sectors and backgrounds.
      • Draft and send invitations and follow-up messages as needed.
      • Support to update communication material, including the SheTrades Brochure.
      • Draft and propose content for social media and the SheTrades website, in coordination with the communications team.

B) Project management support

      • Assist in coordinating with internal teams and external partners involved in project delivery.
      • Contribute to business development.
      • Support in coordinating ITC wide training on gender and disability inclusion.

C) Policy dialogues

      • Work with Policy team to support the organisation of dialogues related to WTO, Continental Women’s Business Association in Africa.
      • Support with the creation of PowerPoint slides, as necessary.

D) Data collection and monitoring and evaluation (M&E) support:

        • Upload documents such as attendance lists and evaluation forms to relevant ITC platforms (e.g. ITC Events, ITC Surveys, Project Portal). Keep databases up to date.

ITC champions workforce diversity, inclusion, gender equality and gender parity and considers all qualified persons – of all genders – equally, including those with disabilities, without discrimination or prejudice of any kind.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants to the programme shall, at the time of Application, meet one of the following requirements:

      • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
      • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent);
      • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in a or b above) and, if selected, shall commence the internship within one year of graduation.

Relevant field of studies e.g. law, business studies, international trade, sustainable development, economics.

Languages

LANGUAGES AND SKILLS:

      • Good level of English. Another UN language desirable.
      • Computer literate, particularly regarding the use of major office tools (e.g., Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel) and social media.
      • Good communication and analytical skills and the capacity to present findings clearly in writing and orally.

Additional Information

LEARNING ELEMENTS:

    • Develop proficiency in project management techniques, by enhancing skills in organizing and coordinating events and training programs, including logistics management and scheduling. Learn how to effectively support the implementation of projects in the field, collaborating with officers and country partners.
    • Deepen knowledge in matters of gender-responsive policy by working in the Data and Policy team with projects focusing on gender trade policy.
    • Develop communication skills by enhancing skills related to advocacy events and communication material development.

Student work plans can be adjusted to achieve the academic requirements in their field of study or time can be made available to advance their academic obligations.

Intern Specific text

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
