International Criminal Court (ICC)

International Criminal Court (ICC)

Position description

Required documents for this Application

Please note that you will need to have the following information ready in order to complete your application:

A completed “Duties and Responsibilities Form” (refer to step 1 on your eRecruitment Profile page).

·Motivation letter (maximum of 400 words).

Contract duration

Interns are required to work full time for a period of preferably six months (dates to be agreed to prior to commencement).

The opportunity

The International Criminal Court (ICC) investigates and, where warranted, tries individuals charged with the gravest crimes of concern to the international community: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and crimes of aggression. The Court is participating in the global fight to end impunity, and through international criminal justice, the Court aims to hold those responsible accountable for their crimes and to help prevent the crimes from happening again. You can contribute to this cause by joining the ICC.

Organisational context

The Secretariat (SASP) provides the Assembly and its Bureau and subsidiary bodies with administrative and technical assistance in the discharge of their functions under the Statute.  The Secretariat provides substantive servicing of the Assembly and its subsidiary bodies. The substantive servicing functions include, inter alia, providing legal and substantive secretariat services, such as the preparation of documentation, meeting reports and analytical summaries, and providing advice within the Secretariat on legal and substantive issues relating to the work of the Assembly.

Duties and responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Senior Legal Officer of the Secretariat of the Assembly of States Parties, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Support the team by conducting legal research and analysis, contributing to the preparation of legal advice, studies, and documentation.
  • Take notes during meetings and assist in the preparation of reports of meetings of the subsidiary bodies of the Assembly, i.e. summarize discussions, highlighting key points and various perspectives for further analysis.
  • Assist in drafting and editing correspondence, letters, and notes, ensuring that all relevant information is accurately included and clearly presented.
  • Provide support with various ad hoc tasks as requested, offering general assistance to the legal team as needed.

Required qualifications

Education:
All candidates must have a first level university degree from an accredited university in law, preferably with specialization in international or humanitarian law, or be in the final stages of their relevant studies. Candidates are expected to have a very good record of academic performance.

Experience:
Internship placements focus on candidates in the early stages of their professional careers; therefore, practical experience is not an essential prerequisite for selection. However, practical experience that is relevant to the work of the Court may be considered an asset. Applicants must have less than three years of relevant full-time professional experience to be considered for an internship.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Able to adapt to multicultural and multilingual working environments.
  • Possesses strong teamwork skills (listens, consults and communicates proactively).
  • Very good oral communication and drafting skills.
  • Has acquired a good standard of computer skills (including Microsoft Office applications) and research skills (including the use of electronic databases).

Languages:

Proficiency in one of the working languages of the Court, French or English, is required. Working knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another official language of the Court (Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Spanish) would be considered an asset.

Other criteria:

It is the Court’s objective to have diversity and gender balance. In line with the ICC’s efforts to improve geographical representation among staff, nationals of non-represented and under-represented countries at the ICC are encouraged to apply. The list can be found here.
