Position description

The Corporate Strategy Department consists of two units, strategy and IFC’s management team secretariat, and is housed in the Strategy and Operations Support VPU. The Corporate Strategy Department supports IFC’s leadership on the formulation and implementation of the institution’s strategy, helps manage Board relations and supports the IFC Management Team and its committees.
We are seeking to recruit a Director, Corporate Strategy, based in Washington, DC. S/he will report to the Vice President of Strategy and Operations Support.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy Development and Coordination
• In partnership with WBG Strategy Office, ensure consistency of IFC strategy design and development with agreed WBG approaches, encouraging ambition and innovation.
• Lead the periodic process of updating IFC’s corporate strategy with credible foresight analytics and understanding of emerging trends.
• Lead development of IFC’s thematic strategies and coordinate IFC’s contribution to WBG strategies.
• Contribute to IFC’s regional strategies and to WBG Country Partnership Frameworks (CPFs) in close coordination with IFC’s Regional Vice Presidents, Divisions Directors and Regional Industry Directors.
• In close partnership with operational and communication teams, promote staff and external stakeholders understanding of IFC’s strategic priorities and commitments.
• Maintain deep knowledge of IFC and WBG past and present strategies.

Strategy Implementation
• In collaboration with internal IFC and WBG stakeholders, evaluate operational implications of various IFC/WBG strategies.
• Support IFC senior management and relevant other IFC and WBG stakeholders in developing effective strategy implementation roadmaps.
• Jointly with Operations Management team, ensure alignment between WBG and IFC strategies and IFC’s key operational performance indicators; monitor and report on implementation quality and effectiveness.
• Provide strategic advice to IFC’s Management Team on emerging challenges and threats to strategy implementation and help develop effective mitigation plans to address them.

Board Engagement
• Act as IFC liaison with the WBG Corporate Secretariat Vice Presidency (SEC) and the Board and advise on planning and delivery of Board engagements.
• Ensure Board materials meet WBG standards and comply with guidelines on sensitive matters and ensure consistency of messaging across various Board engagements.
• Represent IFC at the Board and Board committee engagements as needed.
• Develop intelligence on Board expectations, concerns, and procedures for Board engagements, including preparation of monthly Board engagement summaries for IFC’s Management Team.

Management Team support
• Oversee Management Team secretariat which coordinates IFC’s Management Team, Corporate Risk Committee, Tier III Project Committee, Blended Finance Committee, IT Steering Group, and Standing Valuation meetings; manage agendas, clearances and minutes and annual workflow analysis for each committee.

Team Leadership & Development
• Model WBG values, exemplary leadership and managerial behaviors.
• Oversee staff recruitment, development, deployment and performance management.
• Drive technical excellence and innovation by creating an environment that encourages learning and responsible risk taking.

Selection Criteria

• Master’s degree in business, finance, economics, international relations, or a related field, with a minimum of 15 years of relevant leadership experience.
• Understanding of IFC’s goals, objectives, and operating environment.
• Strong background in corporate strategy, consulting, or business management, particularly in emerging markets, with a deep and sustained interest in development issues.
• Excellent interpersonal, diplomatic, and influencing skills, with demonstrated ability to work across teams, disciplines, and organizational boundaries, partner with business stakeholders, and build alliances for results.
• Demonstrated ability to operate at the highest levels in a complex, matrixed, consensus-driven, multicultural and constantly evolving global environment, handling multiple portfolios at the same time and balancing speed and quality – even in the face of ambiguity.
• Persuasive and clear writing and oral communication skills; ability to communicate complicated technical topics to non-technical audiences.
• Proven ability to lead and manage teams, foster innovation, and guide staff through problem-solving and feedback.
