The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for sustainable development. A key agreement opened for signature at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Convention has three objectives: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal, Canada and is administered by UNEP. This post is located in the Secretariat of the CBD, within the Scientific, Society and Sustainable Futures Division (SSSF) in Montreal duty station. Under the overall guidance of the Director of the SSSF Division and the direct supervision of the Head of the Peoples and Biodiversity Unit, the incumbent will carry out the following functions:
Responsibilities
- Supports the implementation and monitoring of the Gender Plan of Action and related frameworks by assisting with coordination, tracking progress, and preparing reports on gender mainstreaming efforts across the CBD’s thematic and cross-cutting work programmes.
- Assists Senior Management by compiling and analyzing information on gender equality trends and developments; supports the preparation of briefings, background notes, and recommendations to enhance the status of women in CBD implementation.
- Facilitates engagement with women’s organizations, including the CBD Women’s Caucus, and contribute to building and maintaining networks focused on women and biodiversity; contribute to gender-sensitive communication and outreach in collaboration with other UN entities.
- Contributes to supporting gender priorities within the Secretariat by preparing inputs for internal policy discussions and supporting the work of established liaison groups on gender mainstreaming and women’s rights.
- Provides technical support to colleagues in applying gender-specific tools and methodologies, including in the design and implementation of gender-responsive activities, indicators, budgeting, and capacity-building measures.
- Assists in monitoring programme performance, prepare progress reports, and help ensure alignment of resources and outcomes with CBD strategic priorities, under the supervision of the Head of Unit.
- Contributes to the drafting and review of documents and information notes submitted to governing bodies {e.g. Conference of Parties (COP), Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA} and assist with follow-up to meeting decisions and recommendations, as requested.
- Coordinates capacity-building and outreach activities with Parties, Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs), women’s groups, and other stakeholders, focusing on exchanging best practices and supporting implementation of the Gender Plan of Action.
- Assists in preparing policy inputs and technical papers on integrating gender perspectives into biodiversity conservation at national, regional, and international levels.
- Contributes to the development of communication materials, including social media content and advocacy products, aimed at promoting women’s roles in biodiversity conservation.
- Contributes to the collection and analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
- Performs other duties as assigned in support of the Secretariat’s gender mainstreaming efforts and overall mandate.

Knowledge of UNEP and CBD policies, activities and programmes as well as sound knowledge of UN Rules and Regulations. Ability to analyze and interpret data in support of decision-making and convey resulting information to management. Education
- Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in environment, education, law, sociology, anthropology, international affairs or other related disciplines is required. A first level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.
- A minimum of 2 years of professional and progressively responsible experience in the field of sociology, anthropology, sustainable development, gender or environment related programmes is required. Experience in organization of large intergovernmental meetings is required. Experience at the international level is desirable. Work experience with the CBD Secretariat, other Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) or UNEP or other similar organizations is desirable. Experience providing advisory functions to senior management is desirable. A minimum of 1 year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable (none if successful YPP or P-1 with a related degree).
Languages
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English and French is required. Working knowledge of another UN official language is desirable. NOTE: ”Fluency” equals a rating of ”fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and ”Knowledge of” equals a rating of ”confident” in two of the four areas.
