Position description

Assistant Professor – Using AI and the Learning Sciences to Advance STEM Teaching and Learning (K–12 & Higher Education) – 2025/26

The Berkeley School of Education (BSE) seeks a tenure-track faculty member at the Assistant Professor (N/T) level whose scholarship sits at the intersection of STEM education, artificial intelligence, and the learning sciences. We are especially interested in scholars who design, study, and critically evaluate AI in learning environments to improve teaching, learning, and equitable outcomes in K–12 and higher-education contexts. Ideal candidates connect theory to practice through human-centered design, learning analytics, and classroom-embedded research; attend to the ethics, effectiveness, and impacts of AI; and envision next-generation STEM teaching, curriculum, and assessment responsive to diverse learners and educational settings.

BSE is committed to leadership in a rapidly evolving landscape where generative AI is reshaping what it means to know and learn. We welcome candidates who will collaborate across campus—including with the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society—to advance inclusive, research-informed STEM teaching and prepare educators committed to a more just and equitable world.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and publish cutting-edge, equity-minded research on STEM learning and instruction in the age of AI, grounded in the learning sciences, cognitive science or education psychology.
  • Teach courses that appeal to students at the undergraduate, graduate, or professional program level in areas such as learning analytics, AI and STEM pedagogy, AI assessment of learning, and AI in the design of educational technologies.
  • Build and sustain an externally funded research program that bridges theory and practice (e.g., classroom partnerships, field experiments, co-design with schools and departments).
  • Mentor and advise undergraduate and graduate students, including those pursuing research on higher education teaching, learning, and achievement.
  • Engage in service to the School, university, and broader communities, including ethical guidance on AI in education.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to co-design and evaluate innovative, scalable improvements to undergraduate and graduate STEM education at Berkeley and beyond.
