Position description

The Center for Patient Partnerships (CPP) seeks a lead Instructor to teach and supervise undergraduate experiential-learning courses, which are at the heart of our Community Resource Navigator Program. This includes teaching about social determinants of health and structural systems, health advocacy and social justice, identifying and securing community resources, and referring to other organizations for legal, social, and financial issues impacting health. In these courses, students learn a liberation model of service and how patients experience health and social service systems. Through supervised experiential learning shifts, students help clients address health-harming social determinants by clearing barriers to health and wellness.

CPP is an innovative interdisciplinary program housed in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. We do and teach health advocacy and resource navigation to transform healthcare to prioritize the well-being of patients, families, and communities. Our staff is creative, collaborative, and dedicated to making health care work for each and all. In addition to our teaching, we research patients’ diverse lived experiences and enhance the capacity of patients to influence health policy and health care systems. Our model prioritizes systems change to prevent future barriers for patients and communities.

In collaboration with our faculty and community partners, this position will be responsible for developing, teaching, and supervising in, undergraduate courses comprised of a combined lecture- and experiential-learning-based curriculum, as well as coordinating outreach activities and developing partnerships specific to health-related community resources for marginalized communities. This position will be responsible for ensuring that community input and research-based evidence drives the educational program and policies. As part of their teaching responsibilities, and as a member of our experiential learning team, this position will train and supervise undergraduate students providing service to clients. This position will also give “guest lectures” in our other UW courses.

Responsibilities for this position include:

Course Instruction:

      • Designs curriculum and/or techniques for instruction in a dual lecture/experiential learning education model
      • Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes
      • Trains faculty and other instructional staff in use of said instructional techniques and programs
      • Provides classroom, online, and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
      • Supervises and accesses the day-to-day activities of students involved in client support
      • Assists in defining the objectives of the undergraduate educational programs and plays a major role in carrying out program duties

Evaluation:

      • Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
      • Presents evaluations of teaching methods and techniques to those in the institution and elsewhere

Other:

      • Develops grant proposals for instructional development and may serve as principal or co-principal investigator on grants to develop new teaching methods in the discipline
      • May administer budget and personnel for instructional grants and programs
