Summary by Geopolist | Istanbul Center for Geopolitics:

The Ukraine conflict, particularly in Donetsk and Luhansk, has intensified issues surrounding separatist regions. Russia’s recognition of these areas was a major escalation, leading to widespread condemnation and international sanctions, and disrupting diplomatic efforts like the Minsk agreements. This shift has complicated Ukraine’s sovereignty and international peace initiatives, challenging global norms regarding territorial integrity.

The impact of the conflict extends beyond Ukraine. Regions like Transnistria, South Ossetia, Abkhazia, and Nagorno-Karabakh have had to adjust as Russia reallocates its focus and resources towards Ukraine. Transnistria’s reliance on Russian support is challenged by Moldova’s European integration, creating tension between competing geopolitical interests. Transnistria’s geographical and economic position has forced it to adopt a pragmatic stance while facing limitations in Russian backing.

Likewise, South Ossetia and Abkhazia have seen changes as a result of Russia’s redirected focus. South Ossetia, significantly dependent on Russian economic assistance, confronts economic difficulties due to a lack of diversification, whereas Abkhazia’s economic viability is more problematic. The altering support levels indicate Moscow’s strategic adjustment in response to a transforming global order.

Nagorno-Karabakh’s situation exemplifies the shifting power dynamics in the South Caucasus. Russia’s strained capacity due to its involvement in Ukraine has weakened its role as a peacekeeper, leading to renewed hostilities. Azerbaijan’s manoeuvres to leverage Russia’s preoccupations have underscored the evolving dynamics of power distribution. The emphasis on contemporary military strategies, including drone warfare, highlights the changing dynamics of regional conflicts, as demonstrated in the Nagorno-Karabakh and Ukraine wars.

Russia’s involvement has hindered international mediation attempts, with organizations such as the OSCE encountering challenges in manoeuvring through the intricate and evolving geopolitical landscape. These changes highlight the persistent difficulties of separatist regions and the changing impact of foreign forces.
