Job Summary

The School of Education at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) invites applicants for a one-year, full-time, non-tenure track Visiting Assistant Professor position beginning in August 2025 with requirements to be physically present on the Hattiesburg and/or Gulf Coast campuses. The Secondary Education faculty currently provide training to initial licensure candidates in Secondary Education. We are especially interested in candidates whose experience includes bridging research and practice primarily in secondary education but whose experience also includes educational administration settings. We aim to recruit applicants with a background in Curriculum and Instruction/Secondary who will primarily support the School of Education’s Secondary Education programs but are also eligible to contribute to the Educational Administration programs which provide training to advanced licensure candidates in educational leadership. Program delivery includes face-to-face, online, and hybrid formats.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities 

  1. Teaching and mentoring students across programs.
  2. Supervising secondary and educational administration clinical experiences.
  3. Engaging with community partner districts, schools, and community colleges.
  4. Contributing to program and profession through service activities.
  5. Collaborating with colleagues on program development and assessment.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this position will have:

  • Advanced degree in Secondary Education, Curriculum and Instruction or closely related field (by August 2025).
  • At least three years of successful experience teaching in secondary settings (6-12) with knowledge of U.S. public school contexts.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and assessment in a secondary education context.
  • Knowledge of educational leadership in a secondary education context.
  • The ability to provide clear, accurate, and high-quality communication (both verbal and written) promptly and professionally.
  • The ability to set clear performance expectations and provide meaningful feedback.
  • The ability to use technology in an online learning environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include:

  • An earned doctoral degree.
  • Experience with secondary mathematics or secondary English education.
  • Experience in P-12 administration at the middle or high school level.
  • Experience incorporating technology in instruction and assessment.
  • Higher education experience training initial teacher candidates or advanced educational administration candidates.
