Function / Position Summary

Elgin U-46 Elementary Physical Educators are results-driven educators with experience in, and

commitment to implementing a standards-based curriculum and the use of data and assessments

to drive instructional decisions. They are proven managers of classrooms who have established a

culture of learning for all students with the effective implementation of strategies, structure, and high

expectations to achieve measurable academic, physical and social emotional success.

Job Duties / Responsibilities

  • Assume personal responsibility for the academic progress of all students
  • Implement and modify K-6 standards-based U-46 physical education curriculum and assessments
  • Assesses student’s skills, knowledge and abilities pertaining to physical education for the purpose of providing formal and informal feedback to students, parents, administration and state reporting.
  • Use consistent school-wide practices and individualized methods to engage all students
  • Uses assessment and observation to identify students’ physical, behavioral and cognitive needs to support the development and implementation of IEP goals and data tracking
  • Vast knowledge of specialized equipment and instructional strategies to support inclusion in general education physical education
  • Develop lessons, assessments and rubrics aligned to U-46 k-6 curriculum
  • Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment for all students
  • Communication and collaboration with parents and classroom teachers
  • Participates in a variety of training, meetings and professional development for the purpose of gathering information to improve teaching and learning.
  • Provide administration directed instructional support or intervention if content specific minutes do not meet the specials instructional minutes target. This would be designated as “owed time.”

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Professional Educator License (PEL) with Physical Education endorsement (K-9, PrK-12 or K-12) required
  • Adapted PE Approval required
  • PEL with endorsement in Health Education preferred
  • Experience working with students in adaptive PE preferred
  • Experience / KnowledgeDevelop and implement a variety of assessments and data to refine instructional practices
  • Modifies curriculum, instruction, and equipment based on individual student needs
  • Able to assess individual student growth in physical, social, emotional and cognitive areas within the physical education classroom.
  • Assessment, and development of IEP goals aligned to physical education curriculum and data tracking system
  • Ensure smooth operation of all classroom instructional functions
  • Develop and maintain a positive, engaging classroom culture
  • Implementation of technology into the physical education classroom for student and teacher use during activity and assessment
  • Ability to adapt to changing work priorities, communicating with diverse groups, setting priorities, building collaborative relationships and implementing effective lessons in a variety of settings
  • Using movement as an intervention and/or strategy to support students’ academic/behavioral success
  • Physical DemandsThe job’s functions require the following physical demands: lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling light to heavy objects or students. The job requires 95% standing/walking and 5% sitting when not with students.
  • Must be able to provide own transportation between teaching assignments daily
  • Work in a variety of settings, gym, outside, multipurpose room or classroom
  • Work in in a variety of settings with varied temperatures, lighting and ground
  • Terms of EmploymentThis is a 10-month position (184 days). Salary and benefits as established by the Board of Education.
