Position description

The Producer, Politics serves as an integral member of the PBS News Hour politics unit, overseeing the production of video segments for use on broadcast and a variety of online content. The Politics Producer may work from Capitol Hill, the White House, the Supreme Court and the campaign trail as assigned. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Proactively pitch story ideas for studio discussions, guests and tape reports.
  • Manage, plan, and produce political segments for nightly broadcast and digital associated platforms.
  • Research and arrange interviews.
  • Write broadcast tape scripts relying on acquired and field footage.
  • Coordinate and field produce shoots.
  • Acquire, screen, and log footage.
  • Oversee editing of stories for air.
  • Contribute and support production of online content.
  • Assist other producers when needed.
  • Pair with more junior staff to mentor and teach.
  • Ability to handle special projects above and beyond day-of-air pieces or segments.
  • Perform related special projects or other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

  • College degree in journalism, political science, or related field.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of producing original news content, preferably for a national news outlet. Preference for experience covering campaigns and politics.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience covering politics and government at a national level.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced newsroom setting and to adjust smoothly to changing assignments under deadline pressure.
  • Impeccable written communication skills, with careful attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational, project planning and follow-through, presentation, and time management skills. Flexible and able to manage multiple tasks.
  • Availability to work a non-standard or extended work schedule at times with little or no notice.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • BA/BS (4-Year College / University Degree)

LOCATION:

WETA and NewsHour Productions are Washington, DC established media and news organizations. We are a largely local workforce based out of the Campbell Place office in Arlington, VA. WETA and NewsHour Productions value employee flexibility when possible. Most positions based in our Arlington, VA office will be onsite or hybrid, depending upon the role.
