Position description

Impact investing is one of the most important social innovations of our time, and interest in it is exploding. The Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN), founded in 2009 and backed by leading funders such as Ford Foundation, Omidyar Network, Prudential, The Rockefeller Foundation, and VISA Foundation, has a global network of 50,000 on six continents and a formal membership of over 400 impact investing organizations in 50+ countries. The GIIN works to mobilize a global community of leading financial institutions and others to dramatically increase the amount of capital being deployed to effective solutions to social and environmental challenges around the world. ABOUT THE POSITION:

The Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Lead Editor & Writer to join our dynamic communications and marketing team in a managerial capacity. This role will be responsible for developing and overseeing the creation of compelling and concise written content that advances our mission, engages stakeholders and amplifies our voice as the leading industry body for impact investing worldwide. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional editing and writing abilities at a journalistic level, be very comfortable working autonomously, be able to communicate sophisticated financial concepts to mainstream audiences, have an orientation toward delivering outcomes not just outputs, have a strategic mindset and strong project management skills.

Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Lead Writer & Editor must be strongly motivated by the vision of the GIIN which is of a world where the economy works for everyone, financial markets serve all members of society and where finance plays a central role in solving society’s most pressing social and environmental challenges.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Core functions and responsibilities:

  • Editing:
    • Edit complex and nuanced content, ensuring clarity, accuracy, consistency in tone and style and adherence to brand guidelines. Specific deliverables include but are not limited to:
      • Research reports
      • Website content
      • Standards and metrics for impact measurement and management
    • Through editing and proofreading, elevate the quality and impact of all written communications, ensuring they are engaging, persuasive and effectively convey the organization’s message.
    • Maintain a strong understanding of grammar, punctuation, style guides (AP style specifically) and best practices in writing and editing.
  • Writing:
    • Personally write compelling and persuasive communications. Specific deliverables include but are not limited to:
      • Email marketing including organizational newsletters coming from the executive team
      • Editorials
      • Case studies
      • Research reports and frameworks
      • Website copy
      • Talking points
      • Social media copy
      • Executive briefing materials
  • Strategic Contributions:
    • Approach work deliverables with a mindset of managing to results, KPIs and outcomes, versus solely executing a task.
    • Contribute to the development of the overall communications strategy by providing insights on content trends, audience engagement and effective messaging.
    • Work closely with the Director of Communications and other leaders to ensure content effectively supports organizational objectives and amplifies key strategic priorities.
    • Take ownership of and strategically evolve the organization’s brand voice and messaging guidelines, ensuring consistent Application across all written communications.
    • Work with colleagues on the communications team to refine and strengthen the organization’s narrative and key messages to resonate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Project Management & Stakeholder Liaising:
    • Manage multiple content projects simultaneously, ensuring they are completed on time and within budget.
    • In partnership with others on the communications team, develop and maintain editorial workflows.
    • Coordinate with other teams to ensure seamless integration of written content with visual elements and overall communication strategies.
    • Be a self-starter who can problem solve effectively in a fast-paced work environment with remote colleagues across time zones.
    • Provide technical support and mentorship to colleagues across the organization who are responsible for their own written content, by providing learning opportunities like brown bag lunches to workshop their writing.
    • Manage external content creators and vendors as needed.
  • Brand Voice & Messaging:
    • Champion and enforce the organization’s brand voice and messaging across all written communications.
    • Ensure consistency and accuracy in how the organization presents itself and its work.
  • Impact Investing Knowledge:
    • Develop and maintain a strong understanding of the impact investing landscape, key trends, terminology and relevant stakeholders.
    • Translate complex impact investing concepts into clear and accessible language for diverse audiences.
    • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism or a related field.
    • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in writing and editing with demonstrated experience leading projects or teams; journalism experience preferred.
    • Proven ability to develop and execute written materials that achieve organizational goals.
    • Proven experience in mentoring, guiding or supervising the work of other writers or content creators.
    • Exceptional writing, editing, proofreading and communication skills with a keen eye for detail.
    • Strong research skills, ability to meet deadlines and journalistic integrity.
    • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
    • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
    • A strong understanding of or demonstrated passion for impact investing, social impact and/or sustainability.
    • Commitment to human dignity, justice, equality, and respect. The GIIN considers the values of human dignity, equality, justice and respect to be central to the work it does as a champion of impact investing. The GIIN believes that upholding these ideals is a global imperative and is an essential purpose of impact investing. While the challenges associated with these values are experienced differently across cultures, nations, and societies, they are fundamental to a shared human experience and the building of strong communities, a healthy world, and a sustainable future for all people. Successful candidates will be committed to continuous learning about human dignity, justice, equality, and respect and how to manifest these principles in the workplace.
    • Familiarity with digital content platforms like Pardot, SEO best practices and content management systems (CMS) is a plus.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Slack, Asana and other relevant software.
    • Financial journalism experience preferred.
  • Location:

    This position will be based in our New York City office with significant remote work flexibility offered through the GIIN’s hybrid in-person/remote work model. Candidates must possess valid authorization to work in the United States that does not require employment visa sponsorship.

    Compensation:

    The GIIN is committed to pay equity. The salary range for this role is between $62,000-$75,000, with exact salary depending on experience, with an excellent benefits package.

    We aim to offer competitive salaries and benefits and are committed to equality, trust, and consistency in compensation. Basing compensation on someone’s willingness and ability to negotiate or on their prior salary can lead to unfair outcomes in how people are paid, particularly for individuals experiencing barriers. Therefore, we do not ask for prior pay history from our candidates and our offer-making process is negotiation-free for salaries and benefits.
