Statement of the Position

The Department of Secondary Education and School Leadership within the School of

Education at Norfolk State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant

Professor of Counselor Education (F0098) position, with an anticipated start date of

August 15, 2025. We seek candidates that are independently licensed in the

Commonwealth of Virginia as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or eligible for

licensure in Virginia by endorsement, possess knowledge of CACREP accreditation

standards, and have experience in one or more of the following areas: substance

abuse/addictions, school counseling, clinical supervision, and rehabilitation counseling.

Norfolk State University

Norfolk State University is a comprehensive urban, public, doctoral granting institution

(HBCU) with nationally recognized STEM programs and enrolls 6,000 students in over

thirty undergraduate and nineteen on-line and in-person graduate programs. The

University has annual grant expenditures that exceed $20 million. Norfolk State

MEAC Conference championships in the last three years, and a coveted marching band

City of Norfolk and the Hampton Roads Area

Norfolk State University is located in the heart of the City of Norfolk, which is home to

the world’s largest Naval Base. The City of Norfolk is one of seven cities that make up

what is referred to as the Hampton Roads Region, an area that includes Virginia Beach

and Colonial Williamsburg. Norfolk has big-city amenities and attractions of arts and

culture and cuisines of the Eastern Seaboard. There are numerous accessible parks,

riverfronts, lakes, festivals, and beaches in the Hampton Roads Region: all favorable for

weekend getaways and an easy commute to Norfolk State University.

Overview of the Department

Norfolk State University’s Department of Secondary Education and School Leadership

(SESL) is housed in the School of Education (SOE). The department offers the multidimensional Master of Arts Urban Education degree with concentrations in

Administration and Supervision PK-12 (On-line) and subject area concentrations in

Biology, Chemistry, English, History, and Mathematics. The department also offers the

Master of Arts in Counseling Education degree with concentrations in School

Counseling PK-12, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and Rehabilitation Counseling.

These programs assist in-service and pre-service practitioners interested in acquiring

state endorsements and enhancing their professional development.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will teach graduate courses in the Master of Arts in Counseling

Education degree. The candidate will contribute to developing curricula in counseling to

meet CACREP standards and demonstrate expertise in communication, interpersonal,

and clinical skills and techniques. The candidate will conduct scholarly research, publish

in respected refereed scholarly journals and/or academic presses, and participate in other

scholarly activities to secure external funding. The candidate will advise and mentor

graduate students, hold office hours as designated by the University, engage in program

development, curriculum reviews, and assessment of student learning, provide support

for program coordination and administration (e.g. recruitment, admissions,

programming), and serve on Departmental, School, and University committees.

Minimum Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Counselor Education from a Council for the Accreditation of Counseling &

Related Programs (CACREP) accredited program is necessary.

Candidates must be independently licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or eligible for licensure in Virginia by endorsement and meet the CACREP standards for core faculty at the university.

Candidates should have experience in clinical mental health and/or school counseling.

Additional Considerations

Preference will be given to candidates that possess school counseling licensure in the

Commonwealth of Virginia or are eligible for reciprocity.

Candidates with a record of published research in the field of mental health or counselor education and active involvement in professional associations and/or in partnerships in the field are preferred.

Preference will be given to candidates that possess an approved clinical supervisor

certification or are eligible to provide supervision for licensure in the Commonwealth of

Virginia.

Candidates with evidence of an established or developing research agenda that

informs the counseling field are preferred.

Candidates that demonstrate an ability to communicate with a diverse student population while fostering professionalism through competency, compassion, and collaboration are also preferred.
