Assistant Professor of Education Leadership, Advanced Education Programs

Job Description

Fort Hays State University’s (FHSU) College of Education, home to the award-winning Advanced Education Programs department, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor. This key position will primarily focus on teaching education administration and leadership courses and overseeing the superintendent licensure coursework within our fully online graduate-level Education Administration programs (Master’s and Education Specialist). A successful candidate is well-rounded with diverse institutional, educational, research, and experiential backgrounds, including practical leadership experience and a record of scholarly activity and community service. A proven track record in online teaching is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver online instruction in education administration, especially in superintendency.
  • Supervise portfolio and practicum students.
  • Manage district administration/leadership coursework.
  • Contribute to program and department accreditation efforts.
  • Engage in scholarly activities and university/professional service.

Position Allocation:

  • Teaching: 60%
  • Scholarship: 20%
  • Service: 20%

This is a full-time, on-campus or limited residency, nine-month appointment with additional summer teaching opportunities. (Note: Please note that for those eligible to retire with the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System – KPERs, the prearrangement and waiting period rules apply for eligible candidates.)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earned Ed.D. or Ph.D. in educational administration or education leadership.
  • Possess a current or expired superintendent licensure.
  • Experience as a Pre K-20 educator, leader, and administrator.
  • Minimum of two years of online instructional experience in a higher education setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Recent experience (with 5+ years) as a superintendent.
  • Instructional experience with graduate-level candidates.
  • Demonstrated experience working with the State Department of Education.
  • Record of scholarly activities.
  • Commitment to professional service.
  • Experience mentoring teachers and education leaders.

About the Department:

The Advanced Education Programs Department is housed in the College of Education at Fort Hays State University. This department offers fifty-two graduate programs, including Master’s and Education Specialist degrees for candidates pursuing advanced endorsements or degrees in educational or community settings. All programs are offered fully online. Our education programs are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), and the counseling programs are accredited through the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

Community of Hays

FHSU is located in Hays, a vibrant college town of approximately 20,000, located halfway between Kansas City and Denver on Interstate 70. Hays is the regional center for education, health care, professional services, shopping, culture, and recreation for the western half of Kansas. The community boasts excellent recreational programs and facilities, including the comprehensive Center for Health Improvement, Hays Aquatic Park, Smoky Hill Country Club, Hays Municipal Golf Course, and extensive walking, running, and biking trails. Hays is within 45 minutes of two large lakes that offer great opportunities for boating, fishing, and camping. The Hays Municipal Airport provides connecting service to Denver with several flights daily. The Hays community is home to excellent Pre-K and K-12, public and private schools. With over 60 restaurants, major retail outlets, a low unemployment rate, and very short commute times, the city provides a safe, welcoming, low-cost, high-quality living environment for the residents who call “Hays, America” home.
