Title and salary will be determined based of education/experience. Nurse Educators start at $36.70/hour; Clinical Education Specialists start at $39.99/hour.
The Nurse Educator/Clinical Education Specialist, a professional registered nurse, has the authority, responsibility and accountability for delivery of nursing education throughout UPMC Mercy. The Nurse Educator/Clinical Education Specialist applies expert knowledge and skills to provide the educational support needed to achieve quality patient care outcomes. You must demonstrate the knowledge and educational skills necessary to assess, plan and provide the educational programs that are required. Preferred qualifications include an MSN, professional nursing certification, and prior experience in leadership or as clinical faculty.
Responsibilities:
Nurse Educator: Requires BSN and 3 years of nursing experience.
You will collaborate with interprofessional teams to enhance patient care and outcomes while staying up to date with the latest advancements. Orientation, continuing education, and ongoing support for the nursing staff are the main objectives. The Nurse Educator must demonstrate the knowledge and educational skills necessary to assess, plan and provide the educational programs that are required. The Nurse Educator develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by building teams and relationships through mentoring and modeling uplifting and positive communication.
You will facilitate orientation and general continuing education programs and utilize nursing process in teaching staff how to manage the care of patients including assessment, interdisciplinary planning, implementation, evaluation of patient care, teaching, and discharge planning. You will lead in the development of standards of nursing care and nursing policies as well as Identify, communicate, and respond to meet the learning needs of nursing staff. Developing, implementing, and evaluating orientation and continuing education programs based on learning needs, clinical priorities and organizational resources are core responsibilities.
Clinical Education Specialist: Requires MSN or Master’s in related field and 3 years of nursing experience.
You will deliver comprehensive educational programs for team members, mentor and support the team in their professional development and clinical practice, collaborate with interprofessional teams to enhance patient care and outcomes, and stay updated with the latest advancements in nursing care. The Clinical Education Specialist applies expert knowledge and skills to provide the educational support needed to achieve quality patient care outcomes. The Clinical Education Specialist must demonstrate the knowledge and educational skills necessary to assess, plan and provide the educational programs that are required.
As a Clinical Education Specialist, you will actively participate in department or practice-specific quality improvement efforts and identify opportunities for quality improvement to colleagues and management. You will utilize research and evidence-based practice to support improvement in clinical care: identify research issues or articles related to clinical specialty or areas of interest as well as facilitate/mentor staff for projects/EBP/research activities and promote best practice dissemination (presentations, publications, etc.). You will receive feedback and direction constructively while serving as a formal and informal mentor for new staff members and mentor new preceptors to be successful in their roles. Serving as a resource/consultant for patients, nursing staff, and other disciplines in area of specialty and participating in department-based Performance Improvement projects are core responsibilities of a Clinical Education Specialist.

A Clinical Education Specialist will lead in the development of standards of nursing care and nursing policies and identify, communicate, and respond to meet the learning needs of nursing staff as well as develop, implement, and evaluate orientation and continuing education programs based on learning needs, clinical priorities, and organizational resources. You will facilitate staff initiatives to improve patient care and comply with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions while promoting patient education and serving as a clinical practice resource.
The Clinical Education Specialist demonstrates awareness of the impact of behavior on the efficient functioning of the department and organization and takes a leading role in major hospital-wide projects. You will assume responsibility for complex assignments and view problems as challenges, apply creative and innovative strategies in problem-solving to achieve desired goals, and facilitate student experiences as appropriate. You will develop clinical specialty courses to meet nursing needs and provide council or specialty project leadership.

Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience.
- BS/BSN required (BSN waived if MSN obtained in program not conferring BSNs) for Nurse Educator level
- MSN or Master’s in related field or DNP for Clinical Education Specialist level
- If masters in related field required, BSN required
- Relevant teaching experience.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse either in the state where the facility is located or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement with the state where the facility is located.
- UPMC approved certification preferred
- CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
- Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Registered Nurse (RN)
- Act 34
- Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
