DESCRIPTION: Substitute teach in Adult Education classes, including English as a Second Language (ESL), HSE test preparation. Follow teacher’s lesson plan and use own “tool kit”, engaging all students in learning. Substitute teachers are needed in Adult Education classes in the morning, afternoon and evening, and in 20 locations throughout Oakland.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide a safe learning environment for adult students
  • Facilitate classroom instruction, including student use of technology and blended learning.
  • Complete and submit all required data and accountability documentation.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid non-emergency California teaching credential authorizing instruction to adults in the subject area. (Community college credential is not acceptable.)
  • Experience in Adult Education preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to facilitate blended learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage all students in learning
  • Essential for applicant to be nurturing and skillful in inspiring confidence.
  • Demonstrated ability to be accurate and timely in submitting required paperwork to the school office.
  • Ability to work in a team of teachers, staff, and administration.
  • All Candidates need to have a Certificate of Clearance on the CTC before being authorized to work. This link will lead to the information candidates need to fulfill this requirement.

Important Information Regarding the Basic Skills Requirement:

  • On June 29, 2024, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a budget trailer bill, SB 153 (Chap. 38, Statutes of 2024), that allows candidates to use their bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (IHE) as demonstration of the basic skills requirement, effective immediately. PSA 24-07: outlines the Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (IHE) as demonstration of the Basic Skills Requirement. 
  • If your circumstances indicate you need this exam, you may already meet CBEST/Basic Skills through your SAT, ACT, coursework or another qualifying exam. Please check here for Basic Skills Requirement information and here for information about the CBEST exam.
