Capital One’s Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Team has responsibility for helping the overall organization identify, manage, and mitigate key risks that may keep the company from achieving its strategic objectives. 

 

Geopolitical Risk is a topic of increased focus across the banking industry, garnering substantial interest from investors, regulators, and the public. A new team was formed within ERM to integrate geopolitical risk management into our broader risk management and governance framework. To support this work, we are seeking a Senior Risk Manager for our Geopolitical Risk Analytics team.

 

This team’s mission is to stand up and run capabilities to assess the impact of key geopolitical events and trends over the immediate, short, medium, and long-term horizons, across all our Lines of Business (LOBs). This role has been created to meet the expectations of the increased focus and scope around Geopolitical Risk and to enhance the monitoring and controls with respect to the impact of these events on our domestic and international operations. The candidate will also be responsible for the development of Scenario Analysis for different types of Geographic events and designing the relevant crisis response playbooks.

 

As a Senior Risk Manager, you will:

 

  • Develop and implement processes to understand and mitigate geopolitical risks, safeguarding customers and associates

  • Monitor global trends and data to establish early warning indicators and appropriate escalation and response mechanisms.

  • Collaborate with senior leaders across the enterprise to ensure effective risk management and drive results.

  • Educate stakeholders on risk processes and gain their buy-in.

 

Success in this position will rely heavily on working well with senior leaders across the Enterprise. This role requires core strengths in Influence, Results Focus, Problem Solving, Communication, and Teamwork. The ideal candidate will have prior experience working with senior leaders and enterprise-wide stakeholders, a demonstrated ability to manage complex processes and projects through a customer-focused risk lens, and an ability to assess and make improvements to the effectiveness of these processes and related strategies. Additionally, the Senior Risk Manager should have a comfort in developing and presenting materials in forums and other communication channels with senior leaders. The ideal candidate also has prior experience working within an International Financial Institution or Multilateral Organization, with an ability to read, analyze, and rationalize gaps in crisis response by consulting with key stakeholders to address. An attention to detail and commitment to collaboration and teamwork is required, while also having a strong ability to influence in driving results through change.

 

The Senior Risk Manager will report to the Head of Climate & Geopolitical Risk Management.

 

General Responsibilities:

  • Creating and validating processes

  • Designing and producing metrics used to monitor and manage geopolitical risk

  • Driving process improvements aligned with crisis response across our international centers 

  • Analyzing, identifying, and addressing data issues with systems used for monitoring and controlling Geopolitical Risk across the organization 

  • Providing subject matter expertise on processes when representing the department in projects and other meetings

  • Contribute to the design a Scenario Analysis framework for Geopolitical Risks

  • Coordinate the design of crisis response playbooks for Geopolitical Events

  • Demonstrate leadership in a high performing team of associates

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or military experience

  • At least 3 years of experience in Geopolitical Risk Management

  • At least 2 years of experience in Risk Management

  • At least 5 years of experience in Project Management

  • At least 5 years of experience in Relationship Management

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Business Management, Process Management, Project Management, Risk Management, International Relations, Computer Science or Information Systems

  • Process Management (LEAN, Six Sigma), Compliance (Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM), Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP)), Business Process Management experience

  • Language Skills and International Experience a plus

  • 4+ years of experience in Geopolitical Risk Management

  • 3+ years of experience in Risk Management

  • 7+ years of experience in Project Management

  • 7+ years of experience in Complex problem solving

  • 7+ years of experience in Relationship management

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

 

McLean, VA: $170,800 – $194,900 for Sr. Risk Manager

 

Richmond, VA: $155,300 – $177,200 for Sr. Risk Manager
