WPDI was founded in 2012 by artist, social activist Forest Whitaker, who is the UNESCO Special Envoy for Peace & Reconciliation as well as member of the United Nations Advocacy Group for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). WPDI is a non-governmental organization that operates in countries and regions impacted by violence and poverty in close partnership with UNESCO and other United Nations agencies, including UN Women. Our mission is to empower young women and men living in these vulnerable places to become peacemakers, leaders and entrepreneurs in their communities. We help them become (a) mediators who will address tensions and conflict between and within communities with competence and confidence, (b) community organizers who are equipped to reach out to other youth to undertake educational and cultural projects to promote peace, dialogue and tolerance, (c) entrepreneurs who can create economic opportunities for themselves and for their communities. The incumbent will notably be responsible for the communication on activities undertaken jointly by UNESCO and WPDI in Cameroon, Chad, Gabon, and South Sudan.
Responsiblities:
- Liaise with all relevant units of the Secretariat, including the Executive Office of the ADG (SHS/EO), to ensure the communication on the partnership between UNESCO and the UNESCO Special Envoy for Peace and Reconciliation, notably for his participation in UNESCO-led or -sponsored events, including through video messages.
- Support the partnership strategy of WPDI by preparing appropriate communication materials, including with a view to new synergies between WPDI and the Sector for Human Sciences and Societies (SHS) of UNESCO.
- Drive development and implementation of the Communication strategy of WPDI on all touchpoints, i.e social media, website, newsletters and print.
- Build and manage specific communications plans for partners or events.
- Draft and edit articles, speeches, blog posts, press releases, human-interest stories, newsletters, media kits and other advocacy/information materials for both web-based and traditional media.
- Support the missions of the UNESCO Special Envoy for Peace and Reconciliation through the preparation of briefings and fact sheets.
- Coordinate the preparation of high-visibility activities of WPDI, including campaigns and events.
- Ensure quality and dissemination of reports and technical materials to heighten the visibility of the programs deployed by WPDI in its target countries.
Education:
Advanced University Degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant area, e.g. Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or other related social science field.
Experience:
Minimum 5 years of relevant professional work experience in communications, print media, digital and social media, public relations or other relevant fields of work.
Languages:
Excellent knowledge of English and French, both spoken and written.
