Special Education – Teacher Leader Endorsement Preferred

PURPOSE

The primary purpose of this position is to provide support to teachers serving exceptional children throughout the district. Coaches/Consulting Teachers provide support not only to staff members, but also students, parents, schools, and the district as a whole. Coaches/Consulting Teachers also provide input on district policies, programs, and curriculum development.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary role of the consulting teacher is to provide support to the special and/or regular education personnel serving exceptional children and to provide support and assistance through consultation regarding effective teaching techniques, materials, and resources; assessment procedures; effective programming; mainstreaming; and assistance with the development of the IEP: Instructional/Implementation Plan.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Develop an appropriate schedule that reflects the various aspects of the job including regular visits to each school building. Acquire knowledge and skills through professional activities, courses, conferences, individual projects and study and meetings to disseminate to others.
  • Assist teachers in selection, implementation and evaluation of materials.
  • Provide assistance in planning instructional programs which meet the needs of the child and the requirements of the IEP/IIP.
  • Work with exceptional students upon request of the special education teacher.
  • Assist, as appropriate, regular and special educators with handicapped students who are working in the regular classrooms.
  • Serve as a liaison between building personnel and Special Services.
  • Assist the Director and building principals in planning and providing in-service training for regular and special education teachers.
  • Consult with special and regular education teachers concerning problems of classroom management.
  • Help coordinate procedures to remain consistent with State and Federal Rules and Regulations.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide training, support and supervision of state alternate assessment process
  • Conduct observations of students and suggest ideas for developing behavior plans and help with implementation and follow-through of the plan – support the FBA process and development of BIPs
  • Review teaching matrix and help reorganize to meet service time requirements as new students move in
  • Consult w/ supervisors to update individual building progress/needs
  • Support teachers with development and implementation of assistive technology
  • Membership in various district-wide support teams
  • QUALIFICATIONSCurrent Idaho Teaching Credential – Exceptional Child
  • Consulting Teachers require additional Consulting Teacher Certification
  • Five years teaching experience including special education assignments.
  • A record of effective special education instruction. Strong behavioral background preferred.
  • Familiar with the Common Core State Standards, Federal and State Special Education Guidelines
  • A record of implementing research based intervention and instruction in academics and behavior and social/emotional skills.
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to operate independently or as a member of a team.
  • Ability to take initiative and identify what needs to be done.
  • Solid organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have a valid Idaho Driver’s license and a vehicle to drive and/or must provide own transportation for job related activities
  • ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIESSufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively in person and on the telephone;
  • Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents;
  • Sufficient manual dexterity with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate standard office equipment and a personal computer;
  • Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to lift up to 20 pounds, to sit and work at a keyboard for an extended period of time, and work in an office environment.
